U.S. ARMY 193RD INFANTRY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 193rd Infantry Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 31 January 1968, a little less than eight years after the Brigade had been activated following its replacement of a battle group in the Panama Canal Zone. An overall diagonal stripe in the center is a symbol used on maps to represent the Panama Canal Zone, with blue on either side for the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. An upright bayonet is a traditional Infantry heraldry charge that reflects the basic mission of engaging in close combat with the enemy. Palm branches on both sides represent the unit’s Central Europe campaign streamer from World War II. The motto, "No Ground To Give," is a reference to the tiny but essential nature of the Canal Zone.

The presence of the Brigade proved to be invaluable when increasing provocations by the Panamanian government led the U.S. to launch Operation Just Cause, which also had as one of its objectives the arrest and prosecution of Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega on international drug trafficking charges.

Augmented by several units not organic to the Brigade, the 193rd formed Task Force Bayonet and was assigned the defensive mission of protecting U.S. bases, property, and personnel, as well as locating and eliminating or neutralizing Panamanian Defense Forces personnel and bases and other government facilities. Although the operation was a resounding success, the Brigade was not able to return to the U.S. once the fighting concluded. It instead remained until October 1994 and withdrew as part of the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977’s framework.

Since 2007, the 193rd Infantry Brigade has been headquartered at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Its mission includes conducting Reception Operations and Basic Combat Training that ensure Soldiers will arrive at their first assignment as disciplined, physically capable, and mentally tough Soldiers prepared to immediately contribute to the success of their first assigned units.
