U.S. ARMY 18TH COMBAT SUSTAINMENT SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Part of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is the only CSS battalion in Europe and supports operations for U.S. Army Europe and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. It was originally constituted as the 3rd Ordnance Battalion (Maintenance) and activated on 1 July 1941 at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. Redesignated as the 8th Ordnance Battalion on 11 August 1941, the unit was deployed to Europe and, as a component of the 51st Ordnance Group, participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns.

It was demobilized on 15 December 1946, but was reactivated as the 89th Ordnance Battalion in Feudenhaven, Germany and was relocated in 1955 to Pioneer Kaserne in Hanau, Germany. It was redesignated the 8th Maintenance Battalion in 1965, and then in July 1993 it became the 18th Corps Support Battalion. It was redesignated as a Combat Sustainment Support Battalion some time in the first decade of the 21st century.

In the past two decades, the 18th CSSB has served in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, deployed to Hungary to support Operation Joint Endeavor, assisted in NATO operations Allied Force and Shining Hope, and carried out three Kosovo Force rotation stints. “We Forge Ahead,” the Battalion motto, epitomizes the dedication to providing sustainment for forces and organizations in its area of responsibilities
