U.S. ARMY 18TH AIR DEFENSE ARTILLERY GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 18th Air Defense Artillery Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a “unit crest” or a DUI, was originally approved for the 18th Artillery Group on 5 June 1969. It was redesignated for the 18th Air Defense Artillery Group on 4 April 1972.

Scarlet and gold, branch colors of the Air Defense Artillery Corps, are the predominant hues in this insignia. A scarlet fleur-de-lis represents the unit’s service France in the European Theater during world War II; it rests up on an arrow with a scarlet arrowhead which is a symbol of the unit’s participation in an assault landing at Normandy. Behind the arrow are a crossed artillery shell and a missile. The shell sands for the Group’s historic AntiAircraft Artillery service, while the missile denotes the unit’s participation in the early operations of the Nike missile program. Blue protrusions called nebuly are intended to simulate the sky and atmosphere and thus the theater of operations for the unit. Taken together, the upright arrow and the octagon form an allusion to the Group’s numerical designation.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Note: This unit does not appear to be active. It is unclear whether it was disbanded, inactivated, redesignated, or consolidated with another unit.
