U.S ARMY 189TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Headquartered at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) in North Carolina, the 189th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is a unit the 82nd Sustainment Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division that was originally constituted in the Regular Army as 2nd Battalion, 55th Quartermaster Regiment on 1 May 1936. Activated in June 1941 at Fort Sill, the Battalion was converted, reorganized, and redesignated as 2nd Battalion, 55th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Regiment on 1 August 1942.

The Battalion was broken up on 30 September 1942, with its HQ and HQ Detachment (HHD) being reorganized and redesignated as HHD, 189th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Battalion (its E, F, G, and H Companies all began separate lineages from this point on). On 1 June 1943, it was again reorganized and redesignated, this time as HHD, 189th Ordnance Battalion. It would be deployed in support of Sixth United States Army and take part in two campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, New Guinea and Luzon, and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

An inactivation in June 1946 marked the start of a twenty-year period of limbo for the Battalion, which was redesignated as HHD, 189th Maintenance Battalion on 1 July 1966 and activated on the 25th of July at Fort Bragg. Under that designation, the unit would take part in Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989 and take part in all three Southwest Asia campaigns in 1990 and 1991 before converted, reorganized, and redesignated as HHD, 189th Support Battalion in September 1993.

In October 2006, it was reorganized as HQ and HQ Company, 189th Support Battalion, just ten days after completing a yearlong stretch of service for which it was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC). The Battalion would receive another MUC in September 2013, this time for its service between 25 February 2011 and 19 November 2011.

The 189th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called a DUI or unit crest, was originally approved while the unit was still the 189th Maintenance Battalion on 15 March 1967; it was redesignated for the 189th Support Battalion with revised symbolism and description on 16 October 1993. Its crimson flame is a reference to its past role as an Ordnance Battalion, and the crossed bolo knives allude to the New Guinea and Luzon campaigns from World War II. A golden sunburst on he blue triangle is adapted from the flag of the Philippines and signifies the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation it was awarded for its service as the 189th Ordnance Battalion.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
