U.S. ARMY 17TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Artillery colors gold (yellow) and scarlet are used for the trim and background of the 17th Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia, which features one of the most eye-catching designs ever devised for a unit insignia. A fleur-de-lis is a reference to France, while the four red lightning flashes (at the clock positions of 2, 4, 8, and 10) and Arrowhead (below the horizontal “Thunderbolt” in the center) signify both graphically and numerically the five World War II campaigns the unit fought in and the Arrowhead device it was awarded for service at Normandy.

The gold band bearing the Thunderbolt has nebuly (the heraldic symbol for air) on its top and a wavy partition (the symbol for water) on its bottom; together the suggest the impressive range capabilities of Artillery. The black Thunderbolt is a direct reference to the unit’s distinguished association as part of the 17th “Thunderbolt” Division of World War I.

This insignia was approved on 15 March 1979.
