U.S. ARMY 177TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 177th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (commonly called a unit crest, or referred to by the initials DUI) was originally designed and approved for the 227th AntiAircraft Artillery Battalion on 9 January 1956. It was redesignated for the 177 Artillery Regiment on 2 September 1960 ad for the 177th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on 6 July 1972. Following the conversion, reorganization, and redesignation of the 177th ADA Regiment into the 177th Regiment, the description and symbolism were revised for its newly authorized unit in November 1997.

A winged antiaircraft artillery projectile conveys the mission of the 177th Regiment’s former assignment as an antiaircraft and air-defense unit. The organization’s home area of Detroit is symbolized the two wavy flanks on the shield connected by a wavy band, an allusion to the Detroit River connecting Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. “Vigilant And Prepared,” the unit motto, is just as applicable today for the unit’s assignment of training Soldiers and Officers as it was when the unit guarded the skies against enemy threats.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
