U.S. ARMY 176TH MEDICAL BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. The device is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 176th Medical Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 12 April 1983 while it was still based in Garden Grove, California and designated the 176th Medical Group. During World War II, the unit had the opportunity “To Serve Proudly” in the European Theater, earning credit for participation in five campaigns (Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe). It was given its current designation in 2010 and relocated to Seagoville, Texas. As of Winter 2024, the Brigade remains allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve, where it is a part of the 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support).

The focal point of the 176th Medical Brigade unit crest is the maroon cross bearing the staff of Aesculapius; the cross is a sign of assistance and aid, while the staff is an emblem of the delivery of health care. Above, the rays of sunlight symbolize California, which was the unit’s home from 1981 to 2010. A fleur-de-lis recalls the unit’s service in France during World War II; it is colored red to indicate that the unit was also awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation in addition to campaign-participation credits during World War II.
