U.S. ARMY 997TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

A close look at the 997th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, reveals that it uses the shield from the coat of arms that was originally approved for the 195th Field Artillery Regiment (the Regiment’s shield has a border), signifying the descent of the 297th Field Artillery Battalion from the 2nd Battalion, 195th Field Artillery.

Red and yellow are employed to display the giant cactus indicative of Mexican Border duty, and the same color scheme is used for the fleurs-de-lis denoting combat service I World War I, further denoting descent of the Battalion from the 2nd Infantry Regiment, Kansas Volunteer Militia and the 161st Field Artillery Regiment. The jagged dividing lines is intended to simulate artillery fire. “We Prepare The Way,” the unit motto, is an apt adage for a variety of branches in the Army, from Artillery to Maintenance to Support.

The insignia has been redesignated so many time it is almost bewildering. It was originally approved for the 297th Field Artillery Battalion on 23 June 1955. It was redesignated for the 174th Military Police Battalion on 27 June 1966, for the 174th Supply and Service Battalion on 10 April 1968, and for the 174th Maintenance Battalion on 17 June 1998. Its final and most recent redesignation came on 1 June 2015 for the 997th Support Battalion. Today it is worn by personnel serving in the 997th Brigade Support Battalion, Kansas Army National Guard.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
