U.S. ARMY 170TH MAINTENANCE COMPANY UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 170th Maintenance Company Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a DUI or a “unit crest,” was originally approved for the 287th Infantry Battalion on 2 September 1955. Aside from a brief period when it was rescinded (23 February 1980 to 26 June 1981), it has been redesignated for the unit’s changing assignment and title on numerous occasions: in August 1956 for the 728th Field Artillery Battalion, March 1969 for the 110th Ordnance Battalion, June 1981 for the 287th Maintenance Battalion, and November 1941 for the 170th Maintenance Company.

Blue and white, the current and former colors of the Infantry branch respectively, are use exclusively for the insignia, denoting the branch affiliation when the unit was originally constituted. The general area where the unit is located is in the geographical center of the continental United States, and the truncated pyramid in the center of the insignia represents the historical marker erected at that site. The motto “Center Of The Best” is a reference to that location, with “The Best” referring to our nation and displaying the patriotism and pride of the Company.

The 170th Maintenance Company was originally constituted in the Kansas Army National Guard as the 287th Infantry Battalion and was organized and Federally recognized on 8 July 1954. It was converted to the 728th Field Artillery Battalion on 16 March 1956, but the Battalion was broken up on 1 May 1959, with the Headquarters, Headquarters and Service Battery, and Medical Detachment consolidated, converted, and redesignated as HQ and HQ Detachment, 110th Ordnance Battalion (remainder of Battalion begins new lineages here).

October 1965 saw the Battalion’s HQ and HQ Detachment reorganized and redesignated as HQ and HQ Company, and in January 1979 its personnel were transferred to Detachment 1, Command and Control HQ, Kansas Army National Guard, then transferred five months later to HQ and HQ Detachment, 287th Maintenance Battalion; it was under this designation that the organization took part in the Cease-Fire campaign of the Southwest Asia conflict (commonly called the Gulf War or the First Gulf War) in the spring of 1991. The unit was given its current designation on 1 September 1991.

As of Autumn 2023, the 170th Maintenance Company is a component of the 997th Brigade Support Battalion, Kansas Army National Guard. It is based in Wichita, Kansas.
