U.S. ARMY 166TH REGIONAL SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 166th Regional Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, also known as a unit crest or called a DUI for short, was originally approved on 12 March 1971 for the 166th Support Group, United States Army Reserve. Since that time, the unit has been redesignated as the 166th Area Support Group and most recently as the 166th Regional Support Group. The Group is the recipient of two Meritorious Unit Commendations for its service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the first for its 2004-2005 deployment to Camp Slayer in Baghdad and the second for its 2009-2010 tour in support of combat operations in United States Division-North, Tikrit, Iraq. As of Summer 2023, the 166th Regional Support Group is stationed at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia's five stripes of alternating red and white and blue turret with a single white star recall the flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the unit’s home area. Additionally, the red and white stripes are configured to form a chevron, historical symbol of support in heraldry. The turret is based upon the landmark Spanish Fortress El Morro, found at the entrance to San Juan Harbor near Fort Buchanan. A pair of palm branches, a traditional symbol of noteworthy accomplishment, are formed into an arch, one of the strongest shapes in architecture in terms of support; fittingly, they serve to reinforce the unit motto, “We Proudly Support.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
