U.S. ARMY 162ND FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI_

The 162nd Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also known as a unit crest and DUI, was originally approved on 19 October 1951. It was redesignated for the 162nd Artillery Regiment on 14 June 1961, then redesignated for the organization’s current title on 28 August 1972.

Machetes are closely associated with the military history of Puerto Rico, so much so that during World War II the personnel in this organization carried them as additional weapons in addition to standard issue fare. The flaming grenade seen here, a traditional insignia associated with Spanish Artillery, was used in 1763 by a Puerto Rican organization called the Milicias Disciplinades, a prototype of the present Artillery organization. “Hasta El Cabo,” the unit motto, is Spanish for “Up To The Hilt.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted in the Puerto Rico National Guard as the 1st Battalion, 162nd Field Artillery on 8 May 1940, the 162nd Field Artillery Regimen was organized and Federally recognized in late August 1940 and inducted into Federal service 15 October 1940. On 31 May 1942, the unit was redesignated as 162nd Field Artillery Battalion. It would be credited with participation in the American Theater (no campaign, battle, or location inscription) before its inactivation in May 1946 at San Juan (the Regiment is also credited with the Central Europe campaign because of the credits annexed units brought with them to the organization).

In February 1959, the Battalion was merged with two others—the 482nd Field Artillery Battalion and the 123rd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion—to create the 162nd Artillery, a parent regiment I the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS). Redesignated as the 162nd Field Artillery in 1972, the unit was subsequently withdrawn from CARS and reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System in October 1987, with another reorganization coming a decade later that allotted three battalions—1st, 2nd, and 3rd—to the Regiment, with the 2nd Battalion an element of the 92nd Infantry Brigade.

With the redesignation of the 92nd Infantry Brigade to first a Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (2008) and then a Military Police Brigade, the battalions of the 162nd Field Artillery Regiment were all eventually inactivated.
