U.S. ARMY 160TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 160th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also known as a “unit crest” or as a DUI, was first approved for the 160th Field Artillery Regiment on 20 March 1927. It was redesignated as the unit was give new designations, twice while it was designated as a Battalion (160th Field Artillery Battalion in December 1942, 171st Field Artillery Battalion in June 1955) and twice while in the Combat Arms Regimental System (as the 160th Artillery in October 1960 and as the 160th Field Artillery Regiment in July 1972).

A red and yellow shield is divided by a “fess undy of six Or and Gules”—heraldry speak for a wavy line in the middle with six gold and six yellow bulges or protrusions—to incorporate the colors associated with Artillery and symbolize the Red River in the unit’s home state of Oklahoma. A projectile denotes Artillery fire in the upper shield portion, and a gold disc (“bezant”) in the lower portion simulates the “clean cut hits” made by the weaponry of the Battalion. Toujours En Avant, Frenchy for the phrase “Always Forward,” is the Regimental motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

First constituted in the Oklahoma National Guard as the 1st Regiment of Oklahoma Field Artillery, today’s 160th Field Artillery Regiment was subsequently redesignated as the 160th Field Artillery on 10 October 1921 and assigned to the 45th Division. That association continues today as the Regiment’s sole battalion, the 1st, is an element of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, descendant of the 45th Infantry Division.

After being inducted into Federal service during World War II, the 160th Field Artillery was broken up, with its HQ and HQ Battery disbanded and its 2nd Battalion redesignated as the 171st Field Artillery Battalion, an element of the 45th Infantry Division (the rest of the Regiment began separate lineages at this point). The Battalion would fight in fight campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, including two in which they took part in assault landings (indicated by Arrowhead devices on the Sicily and Southern France campaign streamers). It was also awarded a French Croix de Guerre with Palm for its role in the actions in December 1943 that led up to the liberation of the Italian town of Acquafondata in January 1944.

Following a brief period of inactivation after the war, the unit was redesignated the 160th Field Artillery Battalion, an element of the 45th Infantry Division, on 12 June 1946. In September of that year, it was consolidated with the reconstituted Headquarters, 160th Field Artillery regiment to form the 160th Field Artillery Battalion with Headquarters at Tulsa on 19 September 1946. The Battalion would be called into Federal service from 1950 until 1954, fighting in four campaigns of the Korean War in support of the 279th Infantry Regiment.

In 1959, the Regiment was “reformed” as the 160th Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combat arms regimental System consisting of the 1st and 2nd Howitzer Battalions, elements of the 45th Infantry Division. Following reorganization under the U.S. Army Regimental System, the 160th Field Artillery Regiment consists of the 1st Battalion, which has deployed at least twice in support of the War on Terrorism. As of Summer 2023, it is still assigned to the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oklahoma Army National Guard and is located in Chandler, Oklahoma.
