U.S. ARMY 157TH FIELD ARTILLERY GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Approved on 11 September 1970, the 157th Field Artillery Group Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), also called a unit crest, features a battery of cannon barrels conjoined along a firing line, visually augmenting the motto “Might On The Line.” A blue scroll containing the motto text suggests wavy water as an allusion to the lakes and rivers of the unit’s home state of Michigan. The scarlet quadrant simulates a land mass above the water as a reference to the Aleutian Island campaign (see below) which the unit took part in during World War II; it also simulates the letter “A,” recalling both Alaska and the Aleutian Island.

Distinctive Unit Insignias is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 157th Field Artillery group was a unit in the Michigan Army National Guard that was activated 1 February 1968 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 157th Artillery Group and was reorganized and redesignated as HHB, 157th Field Artillery Group on 1 February 1972. Just over four years later, it was converted and redesignated as the HHC, 177th Military Police Group.

But the short-lived unit’s lineage goes back to June 1921 and the organization in the Michigan National Guard of the Headquarters Detachment, 1st Separate Squadron, Cavalry. By the time the U.S. entered World War II, it was designated as Battery E, 210th Coast Artillery. In 1942, the Regiment deployed to Alaska, arriving in the territory on 2 June 1942 and deploying to Adak in the Aleutian Islands on 19 September 1942 as part of the force that would begin the offensive against the Japanese on Attu and Kiska.

Inactivated on Adak on 19 February 1944, the Regiment’s element were redesignated, with the 2nd Battalion becoming the 593rd Antiaircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion, subsequently inactivated in November. It was reorganized and redesignated as the HHB, 46th Division Artillery on 20 January 1947; it was “reorganized” and redesignated as HHB, 46th Infantry Division Artillery on 1 April 1960. After being called briefly into Federal service from 24 July to 2 August 1968 and then reverting back to state control, it was redesignated as the HHB, 157th Artillery Group (see 2nd paragraph).
