U.S. ARMY 150TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 150th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for that designation on 23 July 1927, and its design was amended to add a crest of a demi-lion rampant on 5 June 1936. On the viewer’s left is a castle that represents service in the Spanish-American War; on the right is a coiled snake that symbolizes service along the Mexican Border in 1916-1917.

On a white pale (vertical band) are six mullets (stars) that signify the number of campaigns the organization fought in during World War I surmounted by a rainbow in honor of the “Rainbow Division,” nickname of the 42nd Division that the Regiment served under in World War I France.

This insignia was also approved for the 150th Field Artillery Battalion in 1942, the 150th Artillery Regiment in 1960, and for the unit’s current designation on 28 August 1972. Absent from this insignia is the Regimental motto of FIDE ET VIRTUTE, Latin for “With Faith And Valour.”

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Officially nicknamed “The Raiders,” the 150th Field Artillery Regiment’s lineage extends back to 22 November 1882 when it was organized in the Indiana Legion from existing batteries as the 1st Regiment Indiana Light Artillery. By the time it was drafted into Federal service for World War I on 5 August 1917, it was designated as the 1st Field Artillery; within two weeks it was reorganized, expanded, and redesignated as the 150th Field Artillery. Assigned to the 42nd Division, it would end up serving a half-dozen campaigns in the First World War.

The organization would retain the 150th Field Artillery designation and comprise two battalions at the outbreak of World War II, but after being drafted into service the Regiment broken up, with the 1st Battalion being redesignated as the 150th Field Artillery Battalion, an element of the 38th Infantry Division and the 2nd Battalion as the 2nd Battalion, 208th Field Artillery and relieved from assignment to the 38th ID (it became the 524th Field Artillery Battalion after the war). The Regiment’s HQ Battery became Headquarters and Service Company, 131st  Engineer Regiment. Together, these unit would accrue Regimental credit for a total of World War II Campaigns (three in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and five in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater) and a Presidential Unit Citation.

The 150th Field Artillery was “reformed” when the 150th and 524th Field Artillery Battalions—which had the Regiment’s 1st and 2nd Battalions before Regiment was broken up—were consolidated to form the 150th Artillery, a parent regiment in CARS (Combat Army Regimental System). Redesignated as the 150th Field Artillery in February 1972, the Regiment was reorganized  in 1977 to consist solely of the 2nd Battalion, an element of the 38th ID, and was subsequently withdrawn from CARS in 1989. A September 1996 reorganization defined the Regiment as simply the 2nd Battalion, no longer an element of the 38th ID. For its service in support of the 49th Military Police Brigade between February September 2006, the 2nd Battalion was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation in December 2009.

As of Autumn 2023, the 2nd Battalion is part of the 138th Field Artillery Brigade, Kentucky Army National Guard.
