U.S. ARMY 14TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 14th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was originally approved for the 14th Field Artillery on 20 October 1923. It underwent several redesignations (four) to accommodate the new designations given to the unit over the years, with the last being an amendment to correct the description and correct the symbolism on 7 November 1991.

A round red shield denotes the Artillery branch, and the heraldic cross in its center was utilized by Indians in the Oklahoma region where the Regiment was formed as a symbol of the morning star; here it represents the dawn of a new era with the “birth” of the 14th Field Artillery Regiment. Fourteen drops of water represents the numerical designation of the unit; their irregular placement is meant to represent a dried peyote, a species of cactus cherished as sacred by the Comanches and Kiowas. A war bonnet at the top is pierced by the arrow of renowned Kiowa chief Satanta; the arrow is actually a spear with a feathered end and a leather grip. At the bottom is the unit motto EX HOC SIGNO VICTORIA, Latin for “In This Sign Victory.”

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally founded in 1916 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma with the same designation as the 14th Field Artillery, Regiment did not take part in a conflict until World War II, where it fought in six campaigns and won a Presidential Unit Citation and was cited twice in the Order of the Day of the Belgium Army. During the Vietnam War, the Regiment participated in 13 of the 17 campaigns and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Citation for its outstanding service between 1965-1967.

In all, the Regiment has had six Battalions raised under its colors, but the 1st Battalion is the only one that has been active since 1995. It has been deployed on numerous occasions in support of the War on Terrorism, with both the Battalion and its component Batteries being tapped for numerous military decorations. The entire Battalion earned a Valorous Unit Award for its service in Kandahar Province in Afghanistan between 15 October and 15 December 2012 and a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) for its service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom while headquartered in the United Arab Emirates between April 2013 and January 2014.

The Regiment’s individual Batteries have also been selected numerous times for recognition of their superior military service, with Batteries A, B, and C each earning a pair of MUCs and the Regiment’s HQ and HQ Battery also garnering an MUC.

Most recently, the 1st Battalion, 14th Field Artillery Regiment took part in exercise Griffin Shock conducted at Bemowo Piskie Training Area, in Northeastern Poland May 8 – 26, 2023. The exercise, designed to demonstrate how the United States can rapidly reinforce the NATO battle group in Poland and expand from a battalion to a brigade-sized element as required, involved more than 3,000 service members from U.S. and NATO nations.
