U.S. ARMY 148TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

While the lineage of the 148th Field Artillery Regiment found in the Army Lineage Series book Field Artillery Part 2 published in 2010 lists 1989 as the starting point in the history of the 148th Field Artillery Regiment, it does not reckon the lineage of the then-existing units that were used to organize the regiment in the Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon Army National Guard. These units came from the Infantry branch with service going back to the Philippine Insurrection, and their heritage is commemorated on the 148th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia with a shield colored Blue, which is the color of Infantry. A palm tree in in the lower left is a symbol of service in the Philippines, and the five fleurs-de-lis on the bend denote five campaigns in World War I. “Whenever Wherever,” the unit motto, expresses the unit’s zeal for duty and readiness for combat.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

After its organization in 1989 (see above), today’s 148th Field Artillery Regiment was reorganized on 1 June 1993 in the Idaho and Oregon Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 116th Cavalry Brigade; a 1996 reorganization then allotted the Regiment to the Idaho, Oregon, and Utah Army National Guard, again with its 1st Battalion serving as an element of the 116th Cavalry Brigade; as of Autumn 2023, the 1st Battalion remains an element of the 116th Cavalry Brigade.

The heritage of the units used to form the Regiment in 1989 brought extensive battle honors (campaign credits) and a sizable number of military decorations with them, but they are credited individually and not to the Regiment as a whole; you can see the entire list by reading or downloading the aforementioned book Field Artillery Part 2 by clicking here. In 2008, the 1st Battalion (and thus the Regiment) was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service in Iraq between 12 December 2004 to 2 November 2005.

In 2023, the 1st Battalion is headquartered at Pocatello, Idaho, with its component units stationed at Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Burley, Preston, Rexburg, and St. Anthony.
