U.S. ARMY 146TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Originally approved on 9 October 1926, the 146th Field Artillery Regiment Unit Crest—technically known as a Distinctive Unit Insignia, or DUI—is divided into three sections commemorating its combat history to that point in time. In the top third (chief), five fleurs-de-lis stand for the five campaigns the Regiment participated in during World War I. The middle third (fess) contains a band in red and blue, the colors of the Philippine flag, to denote its service in the Philippine Insurrection; the embattled border at top indicates actual combat participation. Finally, the base has a scorpion on a white field symbolizing service as an Infantry unit on the Mexican Border prior to World War I.

The crest on the top is that of George Washington, namesake of the unit’s home state that was part of the Oregon Territory possessed by the United States in 1846. “Action Front” is the unit motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Regiment’s origins go back to March 1886 and April 1887 and the organization of the 1st and 2nd Regiments of Infantry in the Washington territorial Militia. After being reorganized and redesignated as battalions, the two units had ten companies mustered into Federal service in May 1898 as the 1st Washington Volunteer Infantry to fight in the Philippine Insurrection; they would take part in two campaigns before returning home and being mustered in November 1899.

By 1917, the organization was designated as the 2nd Infantry Regiment, which was drafted into Federal service on 5 August 1917 and in September consolidated with elements of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, District of Columbia National Guard to create the 161st Infantry. Assigned to the 41st Division, the Regiment would take part in five campaigns in France before returning stateside for demobilization in March 1919. In 1921, the old 2nd Infantry Regiment was reorganized in Washington National Guard as the 161st Infantry and again assigned to the 41st Division.

It would finally receive its current numerical designation when the 1st Battalion and HQ and Supply Company, 161st Infantry was consolidated with the former Washington National Guard Field Artillery battalion to form the 146th Field Artillery and assigned again to the 41st Division. But the Regiment was broken up in February 1942, with its 1st and 2nd Battalions becoming 146th and 167th Field artillery Battalions, elements of the 41st Infantry Division. These units, along, with the HQ, 66th Field Artillery Group, would earn the Regiment credit for three campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II, with arrowheads indicating participation in an assault landing in the New Guinea and Luzon campaigns. The 146th and 167th Field Artillery Battalions were also awarded a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation that counted toward the Regiment’s military decorations.

The Regiment was reformed as the 146th Artillery in the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS) with the consolidation of the 146th, 167th, and the 66th  Field  Artillery  Groups. Consisting of just the 2nd Battalion after 1968, the Regiment’s units would not see combat again until the launch of the War on Terrorism. During a deployment in 2008 – 2009, the 2nd Battalion’s HHQ was tapped for a Meritorious Unit commendation, and it’s A and B Batteries were also awarded an MUC for the same action between 26 October 2008 and 31 July 2009.

As of Autumn 2023, the 2nd Battalion, 146th Field Artillery Regiment is headquartered at Olympia, Washington and is assigned to the 81st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Washington Army National Guard.
