U.S. ARMY 145TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 145th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), also called a unit crest, was originally approved for the 145th Supply and Service Battalion on 29 October 1979 and subsequently redesignated for the 145th Support Battalion (with revised symbolism) on 1 September 1988.

Prominently displayed in the insignia’s center is an arming buckle, a piece of equipment worn into battle by medieval knights; along with the colors yellow (gold) and buff and the blue spreading antlers, it represents the mission and readiness of the 145th Supply and Service Battalion. The blue antlers with gold trim also allude to the unit’s entry into World War I service as the 2nd Infantry Regiment. Scarlet and white are employed in reference to the unit’s service as Engineers, and the yellow border denotes service as Armored Cavalry. The scarlet and yellow of the fleur-de-lis refer to World War II service as Field Artillery units, and the five gunstones (black circles) represent campaigns in the European Theater beginning with Normandy and ending with Central Europe. "Born Of Pride" is the Battalion motto.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 145th Brigade Support Battalion's origins can be traced to the constitution of the 1st Regiment, Idaho Volunteer Militia on 19 June 1877. By the time it was first mustered into Federal Service in 1898, it had become the 1st Idaho Volunteer Infantry, the designation under which it served in two campaigns of the War With Spain. After being mustered out of Federal service in September 199, it underwent a four-year reorganization in the Idaho National Guard to become the 2nd Infantry Regiment, which was drafted into Federal service in August 1917. But it would carry this designation for just a few months before being broken up between October and November 1917 and its elements reorganized and redesignated as a variety of Battalions (Field Artillery, Engineer, and Machine Gun) and a Machine Gun Company within the 41st Division.

In the decades following World War I, the unit’s history is a complicated labyrinth of reorganizations and redesignations, with the upshot being that it was not given its current designation until it was converted, reorganized, and redesignated from the 116th Engineer Battalion on 1 September 2006 to the 145th Support Battalion, 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team in the Idaho, Montana, and Oregon Army National Guard.

Since its first call to Federal service in 1891, the 145th Support Battalion and the units that make up its lineage are credited with participation in 20 campaigns from the War With Spain, Philippine Insurrection, both World Wars, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the War on Terrorism (the Battalion's HQ Company and Companies B, E, F, and G have also earned individual campaign credits). As a whole, the Battalion's service has been recognized with two Meritorious Unit Commendations (Korea, Vietnam), a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, and two Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations, with the HQ Company and Companies A, B, and F also being awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation, Valorous Unit Award, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, respectively.

As of Autumn 2023, the 145th Brigade Support Battalion remains an active unit in the Idaho Army National Guard, providing logistics support to the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team. It is headquartered in Lewiston with companies located in Boise, Idaho Falls, Jerome, Post Falls and Rigby.
