U.S. ARMY 142ND COMBAT SUSTAINMENT SUPPORT BATTALION (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB), also called a unit crest or DUI, was approved on 10 February 1981 for the 142nd Supply and Service Battalion. It was redesignated for the 142nd Support Battalion, with a revised description, on 23 June 1993. Although The Institute of Heraldry does not currently (01/27/2020) list a redesignation date for the 142nd CSSB, the insignia is displayed on the unit’s Facebook page as its DUI.

A sword resting on a taeguk superimposed on a pair of crossed golden keys tells the story of the 142nd CSSB through images, with the unit motto of “Support For Strength” encompassing it all. Gold keys are a reference to control over supplies and point to the Battalion’s origins as the 142nd Quartermaster Battalion. The buff-colored area is another nod to the Quartermaster Corp, and buff is also the color used for Supply and Service organizations; here, it simulates sand as a reference to World War II service in Africa and the Middle East. The red-and-blue taeguk pays tribute to the unit’s Korean War service, and the short sword in the middle is an allusion to actual combat participation.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

From Januay1944 to October 1964, today’s 142nd CSSB was a unit in the Quartermaster branch, carrying the same numerical designation but serving in slightly different roles as the 142nd Quartermaster Battalion. On 1 October 1964, the unit began an extended period of inactivation that would end on 16 March 1981 in Wiesbaden, Germany when it was reactivated as the 142nd Supply and Service Battalion. It would serve under that title until January 1993, when it was redesignated as the 142nd Support Battalion; it would later be referred as the 142nd Corps Support Battalion. At some point in the 2000s, the unit was given its current designation of 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and assigned to the 15th Sustainment Brigade, which in turn was redesignated as the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade (or 1AD Sustainment Brigade) in 2015. According to the Army Web site for the Brigade and the Battalion, the 1AD Sustainment Brigade changed its name to 1AD Division Sustainment Brigade in February 2002, and the 142nd CSSB is now referred to as the 142nd Corps Sustainment Support Battalion

The unit’s battle honors include an uninscribed World War II European-African-Middle Eastern Theater campaign streamer and eight streamers for campaigns in the Korean War. Most recently, the Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company was awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations for its support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
