U.S. ARMY 138TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 138th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved first on 4 August 1934; it was redesignated for the 138th Field Artillery Battalion in 1942, for the 138th Artillery in 1960, and for the unit’s current designation in 1970. The motto seen on the insignia, ARMA PARATO FERO, translates as “I Carry Arms In Readiness.” Its four stars (mullets) stand for the four wars the Regiment had fought up to 1934 (Mexican War, Civil War, War With Spain, and World War I) and the cardinal is a well-known emblem for the state of Kentucky.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 138th Field Artillery has an expansive lineage that dates back to 21 January 1839 and the constitution of the Louisville Legion in the Kentucky Militia, a title that now serves as the official special designation for the Regiment. Kentucky’s status as a border state with divided support for the Union during the Civil War is reflected in the fact that enough units in the Regiment’s lineage fought for both the Union and Confederate forces to earn an astonishing twenty-two campaign streamers—thirteen as Confederate, nine as Union.

While designated as the 2nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, the unit served in the War With Spain and was later redesignated as the 2nd Regiment of Infantry before being mustered into Federal service (but not deployed) in 1916. It would be given the 138th Field Artillery designation for the first time on 9 October 1917 after being drafted for World War I. Assigned to the 38th Division, the Regiment was awarded an uninscribed World War I campaign streamer for general service in France.

The 138th was broken up in 1942, with its 1st Battalion becoming the 138th Field Artillery Battalion and its 2nd the 198th Field Artillery Battalion. Those battalions and others that joined the 138th’s lineage through consolidation earned the Regiment credit for participation in an amazing sixteen World War II campaigns—four in the Asiatic-Pacific theater, two in Africa, four in Sicily/Italy, and five in the rest of Europe—and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. (2nd Battalion’s Battery C is individually entitled to a Meritorious Unit Commendation for the Pacific Theater while serving with the 113th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company.) They would also be credited with fighting in four campaigns during the Korean War, earning the Regiment a Navy Unit Commendation in the process.

In 1959, the Regiment was reformed as the 138th Artillery, a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS) through the consolidation of several units that consisted of five battalions and a battery. During the Vietnam War, the Regiment’s units would earn the 138th credit for four campaigns, the last battle honors the Regiment would be awarded.

As of Summer 2023, the Regiment is represented by two active Battalions, the 1st and 2nd together make up the 138th Field Artillery Brigade. While the Brigade is unit in the Kentucky Army National Guard, the Battalions or the Batteries that make up Battalion may be assigned or attached to the Army National Guard organizations of other states. For example, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 138th Field Artillery Regiment (1-138th FAR) is assigned to the Missouri Army National Guard in the Summer of 2023.
