The unit crest of the 138th Fires Brigade is a symbol of the unit’s heritage and mission. The crest was originally implemented for the 138th Artillery Group in 1971, but was quickly redesignated the following year when the unit’s designation changed to the 138th Field Artillery Group in 1972. When the Group became the 138th Field Artillery Brigade in 1978, the crest was redesignated for the unit once more.

The most prominent colors on the crest, scarlet and yellow, are the colors used used to designate Artillery units. The two centerpieces of the crest are the gunner’s quadrant and cannon. The quadrant refers to the control the 138th demonstrates with its incredibly potent weaponry. It also refers to the overall directions of the Brigade. The cannon symbolizes both the unit’s massive capacity of firepower, and the courage it shows while using said firepower. It is also a traditional symbol for Artillery units. Taken together, the quadrant and the cannon refer to the mission of the 138th Fires Brigade. The blue grass underneath the cannon is a reference to both the units heritage and nickname. The 138th has always served in the state of Kentucky, for over fifty years, and was thus given the nickname the “Blue Grass Brigade.”

The unit motto is inscribed in the script above, “Ready in Peace and War.” While the 138th has never actually been deployed on a military campaign, it has served its entire life in Kentucky, and has never been disbanded or deactivated, serving loyally for over fifty years of peace. Despite never being deployed into a military campaign, the unit has earned a Combat Service Identification Badge (CSIB). Its unit patch, identical to the CSIB, can be found here.
