U.S. ARMY 131ST FIELD HOSPITAL UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 131st Field Hospital Distinctive Unit Insignia was most recently approved for the unit on 16 April 2018, marking the second time that the insignia was approved for the unit with the exact same designation: the organization had that title from 1 February 1995 to 16 October 2005. The insignia had also been assigned to the unit twice under another designation, the 31st Combat Support Hospital (February 1973 to February 1995, October 2005 to April 2018). It was originally approved for the unit while it was still serving under its original designation, the 31st Surgical Hospital, on 16 May 1969.

Its maroon and white colors are taken from the branch colors of the Army Medical Department. A five-pointed star is a symbol of wisdom and health while also serving as a reference to the seal of King Solomon to invoke the service’s in the Northern Solomons. A Philippine sun on the cross alludes to the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation the unit was awarded during World War II.

In addition to its service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II, the unit was stationed in German from 1951 to 1992, during which time it was deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Its next deployment to a combat zone came after the launch of the War on Terrorism. During its first tour, it was assigned to the 2nd Medical Brigade and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service in Iraq between January and December 2004. In late 2009, it deployed to Afghanistan and helped establish medical task forces in Regional Command-West and Regional Command-Southwest—the largest geographic area in Combined Joint Operating Area-Afghanistan—and was honored with another Meritorious Unit Commendation, which in keeping with the unit motto made its personnel "Rightfully Proud."

As part of the 528th Hospital Center, the 131st Field Hospital is based at Fort Bliss, Texas.
