U.S. ARMY 130TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The unit motto “REDLEGS” found on the 130th Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, has been a generic sobriquet for Artillerists—Officers and Soldiers alike—since the 1830s and the introduction of scarlet stripes as branch colors.

A fleur-de-lis signifies the Brigade’s service in France with the 35th Division (later 35th Infantry Division) during both World Wars. Three red quadrants are a specific reference to the three campaigns fought in France during the First World War; their similarity to chevrons also suggests support for the Infantry mission alluded to by the color blue used for the fleur-de-lis. A sunflower a the bottom of the insignia denotes the Brigade’s home state of Kansas, where it currently is headquartered at Topeka. As of Winter 2024, it comprises three subordinate units: 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery; 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery; and the 997th Brigade Support Battalion.

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
