U.S. ARMY 1297TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly called a unit crest or DUI for short, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 1297th Support Battalion was originally approved on 24 June 1954 for the 729th Ordnance Battalion, Maryland National Guard. It was redesignated for the 729th Maintenance Battalion, Maryland Army National Guard on 20 January 1967. Two decades would elapse before it was redesignated as the 297th Maintenance Battalion, Maryland Army National Guard on 30 June 1987. On 17 March 1997, the insignia was given its current designation and is today worn by personnel of the 1297th CSSB.

Crimson and yellow, the insignia’s two primary colors, are the official branch colors of the Ordnance Corps. The insignia’s other color, buff, is the Quartermaster Corps’ color and denotes the unit’s past designation as a Quartermaster Company. In the center, the horizontal rayonné partition suggests the intense firepower generated by Ordnance materials. A lion rampant inside the partition is inspired by the coat of arms of Normandy, recalling the French Croix de Guerre the organization was awarded for its heroism during the D-Day landings. Four divisions in the escutcheon (shield) are a reference to the four campaigns in the European Theater of Operations suggested by the coat of arms of Normandy, commemorates the organization's special decoration for extraordinary heroism during the Normandy assault landing. The four divisions of the shield refer to the battalion's battle honors for service in Europe during World War II. "Support the Battle" is the unit motto.

You can find guidance on wear of the DUI in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 1297th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB), Maryland Army National Guard was originally organized and Federally recognized on 3 May 1937 in the Maryland National Guard as Company D, 104th Quartermaster Regiment, an element of the 29th Division (later 29th Infantry Division). Over the next six decades, the unit would undergo numerous redesignations, serving as Maintenance and Ordnance Maintenance units until it was converted and redesignated as the 1297th Support Battalion on 1 September 1994. On 1 October 1996, it was given its current designation of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 1297th Support Battalion following consolidation with the 1729th Quartermaster Company.

The organization’s campaign steamers include four from the European Theater in World War II, one of which is augmented with an Arrowhead device indicating participation in an assault landing, while its campaign credit for its participation in the War on Terrorism are yet to be determined. Military Honors include two Meritorious Unit Commendations—one in 2007 for service in Operation Iraqi Freedom and another in 2012 for Operation Enduring Freedom—and a French Croix de Guerre with Palm to recognize its exceptional service during the landings at Normandy in World War II. In March and April of 2020, the Battalion was deployed in Maryland to provide for backup space for hospitals during the COVID-19 outbreak. As of Autumn 2023, the 1297th CSSB remains an active unit in the Maryland Army National Guard, where it serves as the primary support Battalion of the 29th Combat Aviation Brigade.
