U.S. ARMY 125TH BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Often referred to as a unit crest or as a DUI for short, the 125th Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 19 January 1988. Its buff and scarlet colors are traditionally associated with Support units, and the chevron is also traditional symbol of support in heraldry and reiterates the organization’s basic mission. A wheel in the center recalls the unit’s past roles as Quartermaster and Transportation organizations, while the five golden stars represent the five campaigns in Italy that its predecessor units participated in.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 125th Brigade Support Battalion was originally constituted in 1936 as the 3rd Battalion 49th Quartermaster Regiment, but it was not activated until 1 April 1942 as the 3rd Battalion, 49th Quartermaster Truck Regiment. Broken up and its elements reorganized and redesignated in 1943, the HQ and HQ Detachment became the HQ and HQ Detachment, 125th Quartermaster Battalion, Mobile. During World War II, the elements that remained the Battalion’s lineage took part in five campaigns, and in 1946 the Battalion was converted to the 125th Transportation Corps Truck Battalion and then inactivated.

It was reactivated in Germany in 1955 and redesignated as the 125th Transportation Battalion in 1957, only to be inactivated from 1959 to 1962 and then inactivated for twenty-two years. It was redesignated and activated as the 125th Forward Support Battalion in 1987 in Germany and assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division before being temporarily relocated to Fort Lewis, Washington and deactivated in 1995. Reactivated in 1996 at Fort Riley, Kansas, it was part of the initial force that launched Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003, where it served until February 2004 and then redeployed in 2005-2006.

It was again inactivated for a brief period, and with its reactivation in August 2009 it was redesignated the 125th Brigade Support Battalion and assigned to the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. In 2013, the Battalion was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its support of Joint Task Force-1 between September 2011 and July 2012 in Afghanistan. Its motto, “Bulldog Support,” is derived from the "Bulldogs" Special Designation authorized for the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.
