U.S. ARMY 1249TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 1249th Engineer Battalion was originally constituted in the Oregon Army National Guard as the 3rd Gun Battalion, 249th Artillery and organized a little over week later on 1 April 1959. Since then, it has been reorganized four times, redesignated three times, and converted once, with the conversion marking its change from the 3rd Battalion, 249th Artillery to its current designation as the 1249th Engineer Battalion on 14 June 1971. It has been ordered into active Federal service twice, the first sting running from March 2003 to June 2004 and the second from December 2010 to January 2012. As of Autumn 2023, the Battalion is headquartered at Salem, Oregon as part of the 82nd Troop Command.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 1249th Engineer Battalion was approved on 19 February 1974. Scarlet and white, the Corps of Engineer branch colors, are the predominant colors of the 1249th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI. Its mission to provide engineer combat support is symbolized by a bayonet inside chevron, the traditional heraldic symbol for support; the chevron also simulates Mount Hood and other peaks in the Cascade Mountains around the unit’s home area of Salem. On the right and left are ermine spots; the ermine is another name for a stoat or weasel and is a reference the early fur trading industry in Oregon, renowned as the “Beaver State.” “One Step Better” is the Battalion motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
