U.S. ARMY 124TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (unit crest) of the 124th Signal Battalion was approved on 12 April 1943 while the unit was still designated as the 4th Signal Company. It was redesignated for the 124th Signal Battalion on 5 January 1959 and was amended on 21 June 1968 to correct the description. It was redesignated for the last time on 24 February 2004, less than ten months before the unit was inactivated.

Crafted almost exclusively in orange and white (silver), the insignia features two distinct images. In the upper half is a gauntleted right had seizing electric flashes that symbolize the speed of modern electronic communications. A winged black wheel also emphasizes speed, this time in terms of mobility. At the time the insignia was first approved, the numerical designation of the unit was indicated by the four sides of the insignia (for the 4th Signal Company). Missing from the insignia is the 124th Signal Battalion motto, “Voice Of The Saints.”

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

As mentioned above, the 124th Signal Battalion was originally constituted in the Regular Army as the 4th Signal Company on 1 June 1940. Assigned to the 4th Division (redesignated as the 4th Infantry Division after February 1942), the Company would fight in five campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, earning an Arrowhead device for its Normandy campaign streamer for taking part in assault landings. It was also honored with a Meritorious Unit Commendation and received a Belgian Fourragere 1940 for its two citations in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army.

The Company would be inactivated in February 1946 and would remain so until it was activated at Fort Ord, California on July 1948. In April 1957, it was reorganized and redesignated as the HHC, 124th Signal Battalion. It was under this designation that the organization would serve in Vietnam, taking part in eleven of the campaigns before returning to the U.S. in  1971. For its service between 1966 and 1970, the Battalion was awarded two Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm medals and a Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class.

On 16 December 2004, the 124th Signal Battalion was inactivated as part of the 4th Infantry Division's modular transformation.

In 2003, the 124th Signal Battalion deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its exceptional service between April and October of 2003.
