U.S. ARMY 122ND ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 122nd Engineer Battalion was originally approved on 16 August 1956. AD CAPUT VENIRE, the unit motto on a scroll at the bottom of the insignia, is Latin for “To Bring To An End [Successfully].” A crescent moon on the blue bend is suggested by the same image found on the state flag of South Carolina, home of the Battalion. The moon is an allusion to the Camden Rifle Company, organized as an Infantry unit in 1812 but eventually designated as an Engineer Combat unit that is in the lineage of the existing units used to form the Battalion in March 1947. The blue bend is a reference to the Savannah River, which forms the western boundary of both South Carolina and Edgefield county, home of the Battalion’s Headquarters in the town of the same name.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Although some of its founding units can trace their heritage as far back as the War of 1812, the official lineage of the 122nd Engineer Battalion as determined by the U.S. Army Center of Military History begins in 1946 with the constitution of the 122nd Engineer Combat Battalion, an element of the 51st Infantry Division allotted to the South Carolina National Guard. Organized and Federally recognized in March 1947, the unit was redesignated as the 122nd Engineer Battalion on 1 February 1953. Relieved from its assignment to the 51st Infantry Division in April 1963, the Battalion would remain under state control until ordered into active Federal service on 10 February 2003 (it reverted to state control one year later). It was reorganized in September 2008 to consist of the Headquarters Company and the Support Company.

While its HQ Company is credited with six World War II campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Silver-Gilt Star for its service at Monte Cassino, the Battalion’s credit for participation in campaigns in the War on Terrorism has yet to be determined. The battalion was, however, honored with a Valorous Unit Award for its actions in Al Anbar Province in 2003.

As of Summer 2023, the 122nd Engineer Battalion remains assigned to the 117th Engineer Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard and is headquartered in Edgefield, South Carolina.
