U.S. ARMY 120TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 120th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), also known as a “unit crest,” was approved for the 120th Field Artillery Regiment, Wisconsin National Guard on 26 April 1929. It was redesignated for the 120th Field Artillery Battalion on 24 April 1942, for the 120th Artillery Regiment on 3 January 1964, and again for the 120th Field Artillery Regiment on 11 July 1972. In the center of the insignia is a chevron formed from chevronels colored blue and yellow, the colors of the two branches of the Army—Infantry and Cavalry—from which the organization evolved. Those two colors combined with red are the colors of the ribbon of the Puerto Rico Occupation medal, a reference to the service of Battery A, 1st Battalion during the War With Spain. Five fleurs-de-lis allude to the five campaigns in which the Regiment’s predecessors fought during world War I.

Distinctive Unit Insignias is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Currently consisting of a single Battalion, the 1st, assigned to the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the 120th Field Artillery Regiment was originally organized in the Wisconsin National Guard as the 2nd and 3rd Squadrons, 1st Cavalry between May and June 1917. After being drafted into Federal service on 5 August 1917, the two were consolidated with 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry (which had been first organized in 1880 as the Light Horse Squadron and served in the War With Spain) and simultaneously converted and redesignated as the 120th Field Artillery. During World War I, the unit was assigned to the 32nd Division—which became the 32nd Infantry Division after February 1942—and ended up fighting in five World War I campaigns and earning the Regiment a French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star (Battery A, 1st Battalion was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Palm individually).

During World War II, the Regiment was reorganized and redesignated as two Battalions, the 120th and the 129th, both elements of the 32nd Infantry Division. The two would take part in three campaigns (one including participation in an assault landing) in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and earn a Presidential Unit Citation and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for the Regiment. Battery A, 1st Battalion was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations not credited to the Regiment as a whole, while Battery B, 1st Battalion took part in an additional campaign (Papua) and was honored individually with a Presidential Unit Citation and a Meritorious Unit Commendation award.

Nicknamed the "Red Fox" Battalion, the 1st Battalion, 120th Field Artillery Regiment has been called into active Federal service twice since the launch of the War on Terrorism and is credited with taking part in a single campaign, Iraqi Sovereignty. The Battalion's Headquarters and Headquarters Battery is located in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.
