U.S. ARMY 118TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 118th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called a unit crest or DUI, was approved for wear on 4 March 1938; it was amended in January 1969 to add the Regimental motto, “Wherever My Country Calls.”

White and blue, the predominant colors in the insignia, are used because they represent both the old and current Infantry branch color, respectively. The castle wall is a reference to the unit’s service during the Mexican War, where they had to fight their way over walls and gates even at the expense of high casualty rates in order to achieve victory. The Palmetto Regiment, a forerunner the 118th Infantry Regiment, raised the first American colors ever in Mexico City.

The palmetto tree and fallen, dead oak tree are both taken from the state seal of South Carolina, the unit’s home state and location of its two current battalions, the 1st and the 4th. Both are assigned to the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in the South Carolina Army National Guard.

Distinctive Unit Insignias is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
