The 1146th Personnel Services Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, pays homage to the Battalion’s home state of Alabama with a saltire (“x” shape, also called a St. Andrew’s Cross) inspired by the design of the state flag of Alabama on an escutcheon (shield); the buff tone of the saltire denotes the organization’s role as a Support unit and the scarlet field of the escutcheon is also taken from the state flag. “Maintain The Force,” the Battalion’s motto, encapsulates the primary mission of a Personnel Services unit, while the crossed sword and quill pen denote an administrative role (pen) in support of combat forces (sword).
It is unclear if the unit is still active. In 2007-2008, it was deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where its Soldiers helped process the records of Servicemembers entering and leaving Iraq. It was also responsible for delivery of both incoming and outgoing mail.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
