U.S. ARMY 114TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 114th Infantry Regiment, a unit in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, was originally approved on 29 May 1925, but was amended less than two weeks later to correct wording in the description of the shield. On 3 July 1961, the insignia was amended to include the crest, which is also the crest of the coat of arms of the New Jersey Army National Guard.

As with many Infantry units with histories extending into the 19th century or earlier, the color white is used for the shield because that was the Infantry color for most of the period between the Revolutionary War and the start of the 20th century. A blue saltire cross on stands for service in the Civil War; the blue, four-leafed clover represents the unit’s participation in the War With Spain; and the blue and gray taeguk is a symbol of World War I action. The unit motto of IN OMNIA PARATUS is Latin for “Prepared In All Things.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Represented today by its 1st battalion serving in the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the 114th Infantry Regiment’s roots go back to the constitution of the 5th Battalion in the New Jersey National Guard on 9 March 1869. On 2 May 1899, it was reorganized and redesignated as the 3rd Infantry, the designation under which it would be mustered into Federal service 25 July 1917 and which is commemorated by the Regiment’s Special Designation of “Third New Jersey. In October 1917 it was consolidated with elements of the 1st and 5th Infantry regiments to create the 114th Infantry. Assigned to the 29th Division, the Regiment would fight in two campaigns before the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918.

Shortly after World War I, the 3rd Infantry was reformed in the New Jersey National Guard  (1920) and again redesignated as the 114th Infantry (1921) and assigned to the 44th Division. Deployed to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, the Regiment fought in four campaigns before returning home to subsequent inactivation in late 1945 and then relief from assignment to the 44th Division in July 1946. The Regiment was broken up in 1947 with some units forming the 214th Infantry regiment and the 3rd Battalion becoming the 114th Armored Infantry Battalion. After the 214th was redesignated as the 216th Armored Infantry Battalion, it and the 114th were consolidated to form the 114th Infantry, a parent regiment in CARS (Combat Arms Regimental System) in 1959.

Withdrawn from CARS in 1989, the Regiment was reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System in 1991 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 50th Armored Division. It would be reorganized several more times, first as an element of the 42nd Division and then, following its 2005 redesignation as the 114th Infantry Regiment, relieved from assignment to the 42nd and assigned to the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) formed in 2008. It remained with the unit when it was reflagged as the 44th IBCT and is still assigned to it as of Summer 2023.

While the Regiment as a whole has not received any military decorations aside from streamers for campaign participation, Companies B and D, 1st Battalion were both the recipients of a Presidential Unit Citation for action at Hurtgen Forest in World War II and a Belgian Fourragere 1940 for two Citations in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army, one for Elsenborn Crest and another for the Battle of the Bulge (both companies were elements of the 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion at the time). Additionally, these two companies are credited with participation in the Normandy campaign in World War II, while the HQ Company, 1st Battalion is entitled to credit for eleven Civil War campaigns.
