U.S. ARMY 113TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 113th Support Battalion, called the 113th Brigade Support Battalion since its assignment to the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 38th Infantry Division, was originally approved for the 113th Medical Regiment, Kentucky and Indiana National Guard on 30 June 1926. In September 1942 it was redesignated for the 11th Medical Battalion, and again on 10 November 1992 for the 113th Support Battalion.

Maroon and white are used in the insignia, also called a DUI or a unit crest, to identify the organization as part of the Medical Corps, the branch of the parent organization at the time the insignia was approved. The white Maltese cross on a black shield was the sign of the Knights Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, formed to help the wounded and sick in 1118 and considered to be the first medical group created solely for military personnel. Maroon and black sharing equal portions of the shield denotes the similarities between the duties of the Hospitallers and those of the current medical organization. FIRMITAS ET SANITAS, the unit motto, translates in English as “Strength And Health.”

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 113th Brigade Support Battalion originated as a medical unit affiliated with the Michigan National Guard and organized at Camp Shelby, Mississippi in 1917. After serving in World War I, the unit was demobilized in February 19191 and then reconstituted, this time in the Indiana and Kentucky National Guard, as the 113th Medical Regiment and assigned to the 38th Division. During World War II, the Regiment was redesignated as 113th Medical Battalion and deployed to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, where it took part in three campaigns—New Guinea, Leyte, and Luzon—and was recognized for its extraordinary service with a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

Following the war, the unit was subsequently deactivated at Camp Anza, California, the reorganized and Federally recognized in the Indiana Army National Guard, its current parent organization. It was redesignated as the 113th Support Battalion in 1993 and is now designated as the 113th Brigade Support Battalion, 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and is headquartered at Muncie, Indiana.
