U.S. ARMY 113TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 113th Infantry Regiment’s nickname, “First New Jersey,” reflects its origins in 1775 when the 1st New Jersey Regiment, Continental Army was created between October 26 and December 15. Assigned to the New Jersey Brigade, the Regiment took part in ten Revolutionary War campaigns before its redesignation as the New Jersey Regiment in 1783.

Since that time, the Regiment has undergone myriad redesignations, reorganizations, and consolidations, not receiving its current numerical designation until 1917 (as the 113th Infantry). During the 19th century, the Regiment (or units that became associated with it) fought in the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and in the 20th it saw action in both World Wars. It was twice cited in the Order of the Day of the Belgium during the Second World War, and three of the companies in its 2nd Battalion were honored with the French Croix de Guerre with Palm. In the War on Terrorism, elements of the Regiment were recognized for participation in two Campaigns, and the 2nd Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation. As of 2023, only the Regiment's 2nd Battalion is in active service, assigned as one of two Infantry regiments to the 44th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

Originally approved on 26 March 1925, the 113th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) was amended four months later to include the motto “FIDELIS ET FORTIS” (Faithful and Brave). The shield is blue for the color of Infantry, and the white saltire (diagonal cross) is in memory of Civil War service; the silver oak tree recalls the Argonne Forest and World War I.
