U.S. ARMY 113TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also called a unit crest or a DUI, the 113th Field Artillery Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 24 February 1931. Other units it was approved for over the decades since then include the 113th Field Artillery Battalion (July 1942), 113th Artillery Regiment (May 1960), and the current designation (August 1972).

A red shield is used to denote the organization as an Artillery unit. The image of a falcon on a mount is an allusion to the capture of Montfaucon on 27 September 1918 by the 79th Division, the unit to which the 113th was attached at the time. The gold bend is taken from the coat of arms of Lorraine; the mount, bend, and falcon stand for three major engagements the unit fought in during World War I; the remaining three are represented by the fleurs-de-lis below the bend. Absent from the unit crest is the 113th Field Artillery Regiment motto, “Carry On.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 113th Field Artillery Regiment was originally constituted in the North Carolina National Guard on 27 June 1917 as the 1st Regiment, North Carolina Field Artillery. After being drafted into Federal service, the unit as reorganized and redesignated as the 113th Field Artillery and assigned to the 30th Division. It would eventually fight in six campaigns before the signing of the Armistice and its return to the United States and subsequent demobilization at Camp Jackson, South Carolina.

After being inducted into service in September 1940 at home stations, the Regiment was broken up and reorganized, with the 1st Battalion becoming the 113th Field Artillery Battalion and the remainder of the Regiment becoming the 196th Field Artillery. These two branches would be reunited and consolidate with other units in 1959 to form the 113th Artillery Regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System, but in the meantime they (and units annexed into the lineage of the Regiment) would go on to take part in a total of eight World War II campaigns. (Note: Battery C is also entitled to seven campaign credits from the Korea War, and individual Regiment components earned many military decorations during both World Wars; this information can be found in
Field Artillery: Part 2 in the U.S. Center of Military History’s Lineage Series.)

The Regiment would not see combat again until after the launch of the War on Terrorism; by then, it had been reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System as a parent regiment with the two aforementioned battalions, the 1st and 5th. The 1st Battalion was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its exceptional service between May 2009 and January 2010 with the 1st Cavalry Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As of Autumn 2023, the 113th Field Artillery Regiment  has two active Battalions: its 1st Battalion is assigned to the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team, North Carolina Army National Guard, while its 5th Battalion is part of another NC Army National Guard organization, the 60th Troop Command.
