U.S. ARMY 113TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

The 113th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 26 May 1928. It was subsequently redesignated for the 113th Engineer Combat Battalion in November 1943, and lastly on 23 September 1963 for the 113th Engineer Battalion, Indiana Army National Guard. Originally, the insignia consisted solely of the shield portion and the motto of “Service And Fidelity” from the coat of arms; on 5 June 1936, the crest from the coat of arms of the Indiana National Guard was added.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

A unit in the Indiana Army National Guard, the 113th Engineer Battalion is assigned to the 219th Engineer Brigade and is headquartered at Gary, Indiana. In addition to its Headquarters Company, the Battalion comprises a Forward Support Company also based in Gary, the 713th Engineer Company (based in Valparaiso), 131th Engineer Company (Edinburgh), 1413th Engineer Company (North Vernon), and the 1613th Engineer Support (Laporte).

Organized in 1917, the Battalion has been assigned to the 38th Infantry Division for most of its service life. During World War I, it served with the 38th Division (Infantry Divisions did not come into existence until February 1942) with its primary role being construction of infrastructure such as base camps. The Battalion’s World War I service is commemorated on the 113th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (a device also referred to by Soldiers as a “unit crest” or by its initialism DUI) by a silver, triple-towered castle; the image is taken from the coat of arms of St. Dizier in France.

The Battalion served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II, arriving on Leyte in the Philippines in December 1944 where they again concentrated on infrastructure construction, erecting camps, depots, and even bridges, utilizing the recently developed portable Bailey Bridge.

Service in the Pacific marked the end of overseas combat operations for the Battalion until late in 2004 when it was deployed in northern Iraq near the vitally important Nineveh province. During that deployment, the Battalion’s exceptional service in the face of daunting conditions between 5 January 2005 and 15 February 2005 led to it being selected for a Valorous Unit Award, which was issued in July 2011. Later that year (18 May 2005 to 23 September 2005), the Battalion’s Company A earned a Valorous Unit Award for its extraordinary heroism in action around Nineveh Province while serving with the 3rd Armored Cavalry.
