U.S. ARMY 113TH CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 113th Cavalry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called a “unit crest” or a DUI, was originally approved for the 113th Regiment Cavalry, Iowa National Guard on 12 February 1927. In June 1950 it was redesignated for the 113th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, and a decade later (October 1960) it was redesignated again for the 113th Armor, Iowa National Guard. It was redesignated for the 113th Cavalry Regiment with an effective date of 1 September 1992. The unit motto of "We Maintain" expresses the cool professionalism evinced by the 113th Cavalry Regiment as well as that of its forebears whose battle honors it is entitled to display.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted on 4 May 1992 as a parent regiment under the U.S. Army Regimental System, the 113th Cavalry Regiment was organized on 1 September 1992 from existing units to consist of the 1st Squadron, an element of the 34th Infantry Division, on 1 September 1992. A decade later, the Regiment was reorganized to comprise 1st Squadron and Troop G, both elements of the 34th Infantry Division, with the 1st Squadron begin called into Federal service from October 2003 to October 2004.

The Regiment received its current designation of 113th Cavalry Regiment (as opposed to just “113th Cavalry”) on 1 October 2005, and eleven months later was reorganized to consist solely of the 1st Squadron, an element of the 34th Infantry Division headquartered at Sioux City, Iowa. In August 2010, the 1st Squadron was ordered again in to Federal Service until 7 September 2011 when it reverted back to state control in the Iowa Army National Guard. For that deployment with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, the 1st Squadron was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for it support of counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan. As of Summer 2023, the 113th Cavalry Regiment is represented solely the 1st Squadron which is still a part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division.

The 113th Cavalry is also entitled to display the honors of the inactivated 113th Armor Regiment, which includes pre-1992 honors of its predecessor units dating back to World War I. These include a World War I Victory streamer (uninscribed) and four campaign streamers from World War II for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Additionally, several of its component Troops (HQ Troop, Troop A, and Troop C) are entitled to individual battle honors, i.e., campaign credits, as well as individual military decorations; a full list can be found at the U.S. Center of Military History’s
lineage page for the 113th Cavalry Regiment.
