U.S. ARMY 111TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Since 1987, the mission referenced in the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade motto of “Mission First” displayed on the organization's Distinctive Unit Insignia has been training Soldiers in the disciplines of Military Intelligence and how to leverage them in real-world combat operations. As stated on its Web site, the overarching task of the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade is to conduct "Initial Military Training, Professional Military Education and functional training to produce intelligence warfighters to execute and lead intelligence core competencies in all domains at echelon." As Winter 2024, the Brigade is headquartered at Fort Huachaca, Arizona.

Also called a unit crest or just DUI for short, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 111th Military Intelligence borrows the heraldic rose from the Military Intelligence Corps as a shorthand method to symbolize the basic mission of the Brigade: collect, check, and provide any information that might have been gleaned about a present or potential enemy. A phoenix (which can also be seen as an eagle) rising from flames represents the unit’s former location at Fort McPherson in Atlanta and its “rebirth” after a 14-year inactivation through its 1987 redesignation. The seven stars around the flame represent the states in which the unit has operated

Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
