Approved 26 June 1990, the 111th Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or a DUI, is comprised of the shield from the coat of arms and the addition of the unit motto, “Air Warrior Air Attack,” on an attached scroll. Its ultramarine blue and golden orange hues are colors traditionally associated with Army Aviation units, and the wings enveloping the sun suggest bravery, freedom, aviation, and the aggressiveness of Army attack helicopters (reinforced by the motto). The red saltire in the lower half of the shield is adapted from the stage flag of Florida, where the unit serves in the Florida Army National Guard. Superimposed over the center of the saltire is a four-bastioned fort that stands for Castillo de San Marcos, which recalls the heritage of the Florida militia.

The 111th Aviation Regiment was first organized in the Florida Army National Guard as Company D, 26th Aviation Battalion; it was Federally recognized on 1 September 1978 at Jacksonville. It was expanded, reorganized, and redesignated as the 419th Aviation Battalion on 2 October 1986, and the following year it was redesignated as the 111th Aviation, a parent regiment in the U.S. Army Regimental System consisting of the 1st Battalion; a 2nd Battalion was later raised under the regiment’s colors.
Today, the Regiment falls under the control of the Florida Army National Guard’s 83rd Troop Command, with its 1st Battalion based at Jacksonville and its subordinate units stationed in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Puerto Rico. The 2nd Battalion is based at Camp Blanding, Florida.
