U.S. ARMY 110TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 110th Information Operations Battalion, commonly known as a unit crest or DUI, was originally designed for the 110th Field Artillery Regiment and approved on 13 April 1924. When the Regiment’s sole active battalion, the 2nd, was inactivated on 8 August 2009, the insignia was redesignated for the 110th Information Operations Battalion, which also assumed the heritage of the 2nd Battalion and the 110th Field Artillery Brigade.

Like many unit crests, the 110th Information Operations Battalion DUI is actually the shield from the Battalion’s coat of arms (the Wikipedia page for the unit mistakenly displays the crest from the coat of arms as part of the DUI). The scarlet coloration of the upper portion reflects the unit’s status as a Field Artillery unit at the time the insignia was approved; the laurel in the wreath is for achievement, while the oak leaf portion alludes to the grove of oak trees in the which Regiment’s armory was located. The oak leaves are also an emblem of strength and steadfastness, qualities that are invoked by the unit motto of SICUT QUERCUS, Latin for “As The Oak.” The yellow and black pattern at the bottom is the Calvert arms taken from the shield of the state of Maryland.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 110th Information Operations Battalion inherited the heritage of the 110th Field Artillery Regiment, which traced its origins to the organization of the Light Artillery Battery in the Maryland National Guard on 28 December 1915. The unit became the 110th Field Artillery on 27 November 1917 when it was redesignated and assigned to the 29th Division, the parent unit it served under while earning taking part in three World War I campaigns. The Regiment was broken up in February 1942—a fate very common among Field Artillery regiments—and its 1st and 2nd Battalions became the 110th and 224th Field Artillery Battalions; between them, they fought in five campaigns in the European Theater during World War II and earned the Regiment a French Croix de Guerre.

The battalions were reunited when they were consolidated along with the HQ, 110th Field Artillery to become the 110th Artillery, a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System. On 1 July 1986, the Regiment was reorganized in the U.S. Army Regimental System to consist of a single battalion, the 2nd, that was an element of the 29th Infantry Division.

Reorganized 1 July 1986 to consist of the 2d Battalion, an element of the 29th infantry division. Withdrawn 1 June 1989 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System. The 2nd Battalion, 110th Field Artillery Regiment was inactivated in August 2009 and passed its heritage (and the Regiment’s) to the 110th Information Operations Battalion.
