U.S. ARMY 108TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

A unit in the South Carolina Army National Guard (ARNG), the 108th Signal Battalion is assigned to the 228th Signal Brigade and is headquartered in Camden, South Carolina. It was originally constituted in the South Carolina ARNG at Columbia as HQ and HQ Detachment, 108th Signal Battalion on 1 October 1980; in December 1983, its location was changed to its current home at Camden.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

“Pride In Excellence,” the unit motto, is inscribed in white (silver) on a blue scroll cresting the circular design of the 108th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), also called a unit crest. Below the motto is a green palmetto tree, a reference to the unit’s home area of South Carolina, the “Palmetto State.”

A white star at the base of the insignia suggests both command responsibility and leadership, key to the overall mission of the organization. Two lighting bolts/flashes in orange are symbols of the speed and power of modern electronics communications while invoking the Signal Corps (orange and white are Signal Corps branch colors).

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
