U.S. ARMY 105TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 105th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia—commonly called a unit crest or by the initialism DUI—was approved on 29 April 1982. Its predominant tones of silver gray and oriental blue are featured as the branch colors of Military Intelligence. The saltirewise (crossed) sword and key represent support and are symbols of leadership, while the lightning flashes suggest the speed of modern electronic communications; they also recall World War II and the Vietnam War, conflicts in which elements of the Battalion served. Owls are traditional symbols of wisdom and watchfulness, and the red diamond shape (lozenge) in which it is set is an allusion to the 5th Infantry Division which this organization supported. The motto "Bold Vigil" stresses the 24/7 nature of the Military Intelligence mission.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

Originally constituted on 15 May 1967 as HQ and HQ Company, 200th Army Security Agency Battalion, the 105th Military Intelligence Battalion would not receive that designation until fifteen years later in 1982. Activated at Fort Polk and assigned to the 5th Infantry Division, the Battalion's A and B Companies were created through the concurrent reorganization and redesignation of the 405th Army Security Agency (ASA) Company and the 15th Military Intelligence Company, respectively.

The 405th had been originally constituted as 405th ASA Detachment on 31 May 1965 and the 15th was first formed as the 5th Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment on 12 July 1944. Company A is individually entitled to credit for participation in nine Vietnam War campaigns, three Meritorious Unit Commendations from Vietnam, and a Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class. Company B’s individual battle honors include five campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of World War II: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.

The 105th Military Intelligence Battalion was inactivated on 16 December 1982 at Fort Polk, Louisiana, but a Provisional 105th Military Battalion was activated at some unknown later date and was still in existence in 2006.
