U.S. ARMY 101ST BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 101st Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly known as a unit crest or a DUI for short, was originally approved on 11 May 1928. It has been redesignated several times to accommodate the Battalion’s changing roles and designations, with the most recent redesignation coming in 5 June 1987 when the unit became the 101st Support Battalion. The insignia celebrates the Battalion’s service in World War in France, featuring a green tree for the Argonne Forest and a silver fleur-de-lis for Soissons. PORTONS LES FARDEAUX, the unit motto, is Latin for “Let Us Carry The Burdens.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Nicknamed “Devil’s Guardians” because of the support role they provide for the “Devil’s Brigade”—the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT), 1st Infantry Division—the 101st Brigade Support Battalion was originally constituted on 24 May 1917 in the Regular Army as the Motor Supply Train, 1st Division and organized in France the following February. Redesignated as the 1st Supply Train as part of the 1st Division, the unit would ultimately take part in a half-dozen World War I campaigns. It would underwent several redesignations during the interwar period before becoming the 1st Quartermaster Company on 17 November 1943, the designation under which it would end up fighting in seven World War II campaigns. During the course of the next six campaigns, its service would be recognized with two French Croix de Guerre with Palm and a French Fourragere and a Belgian Fourragere 1940.

It would retain that designation until January 1964, when it was redesignated as HQ and HQ Company, 1st Supply and Transport Battalion, the designation under which it served in eleven Vietnam War campaigns and earn three Meritorious Unit Commendations (MUCs), a Republic of Vietnam (ROV) Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and a ROV Civic Action Honor Medal. Inactivated in 1985, the unit was redesignated as the 101st Support Battalion in May 1987 and activated at Fort Riley as an element of the 1st Infantry Division, the unit it served with during the First Gulf war and with which it earned another MUC and then, more than a decade later, a Valorous Unit Award for Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004).

Most recently, the Battalion was relieved from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division in 2009 and given its current mission of providing transportation, supply, maintenance, medical, and administrative support to the 1st ABCT, 1st Infantry Division. It is currently based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
