Air Force Aide-de-Camps are all-purpose assistants to the Secretary of the Air Force, Chief and Vice Chief Staff of the Air Force, Commanders in grades O-8 to O-10, Vice Commanders or Deputy Commanders (O-8 to O-10) who serve at an installation different than the Commander, or Generals (Major General, Lieutenant General, or General) who are serving outside the Air Force (these aides are assigned on a case-by-case basis).

Though only Officers serve as Aide-de-Camp, no particular undergraduate degree is required to qualify for the position, and there is no specific training protocol. What is required is extensive, up-to-date knowledge of military customs, courtesies, and traditions, along with a thorough understanding of the organization, mission, history, and policies of the United States Air Force.

The insignia used as collar devices for Aide-de-Camps has undergone several changes throughout the decades, but a constant feature has been that the rank of the General or Commander whom the Aide is serving is displayed through stars on the badge. The two stars on this badge indicates the wearer is an Aide-de-Camp for a Major General or Commander of equivalent rank.
