USAF CAPTAIN COAT RANK INSIGNIA

Like the United States Army and Marine Corps, the Air Force Captain rank insignia consists of two linked silver bars; this insignia is also worn by Lieutenants in the United States Navy and Coast Guard.

Typically associated with Men’s and Women’s Service Dress uniforms where they are worn on the epaulets 5/8 of an inch from the end of the epaulets and parallel to the seam, these shiny bars are also worn on the Lightweight Blue Jacket, the Topcoat, the Modified Dress Uniform and Ceremonial Band Tunic worn by members of Air Force bands, and on the epaulets of the Security Forces Jacket and the jacket worn by members of the Presidential Airlift Group.

On average, it takes an Air Force officer four years to reach the rank of Captain, with approximately two years spent each in the ranks of 2d Lieutenant and 1st Lieutenant. Captain is considered a junior or company-grade officer, and a subdued version of the Captain’s two bars is worn on the collar of the Airman Battle Uniform.
