U.S. ARMY 902ND MILITARY INTELLIGENCE GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 902nd Military Intelligence Group Distinctive Unit insignia features the unit motto “Strength Through Vigilance” in black script on a gold banner; black is the color of solidarity and unity, while gold denotes excellence and high achievement. Above the motto is a partial view of a chessboard with a knight resting atop it. Besides mimicking the gridlines of the globe on the Group’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, the chessboard signifies the strategic moves exemplified by the knight, the only chess piece that can move “over” an opponent.

At the top of the insignia is a Philippine sunrise, an allusion to the Group’s service in World War II that earned it credit for participation in the New Guinea and Luzon campaigns and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation while it was designated as the 902nd Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) Detachment.

Following its disbandment in 1945, the 902nd CIC Detachment was reconstituted in 1947 and allotted to the Organized Reserves (later known as the Army Reserve) until it was again inactivated in 1949. In January 1952, it was withdrawn from the Reserves and allotted to the Regular Army and activated at Fort Holabird, Maryland. In October 1955, it was given the administrative designation Army Assistance Group, 8592nd Administrative Area Unit, then simply Army Assistance Group (8592). Effective 15 December 1957, the detachment because the 902nd Counter Intelligence Corps Group, then the 902nd Intelligence Corps Group on 25 July 1961. It was finally designated as the 902nd Military Intelligence Group on 15 October 1966.

During a ceremony held on 28 July 2022 at Fort Geore G. Meade, the Army Counterintelligence Command was activated as a major subordinate command of U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), resulting in the concurent inactivation of the 902nd Military Intelligence Group.
