The 89th Military Police Brigade unit patch, more formally known as a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, was approved on 20 October 1981 and serves as the basis for the Brigade’s Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB). The eight points of the star and nine yellow and green stripes allude to the numerical designation of the Brigade, while the star is an image traditionally associated with law enforcement. A dragon’s head is symbolic of the Brigade’s activation in Vietnam, while the sword beneath stands for the power of military justice. The dragon motif is also used on the 89th Military Police Brigade unit crest (Distinctive Unit Insignia), which features the Brigade’s motto of “Proven In Battle.”

Along with the 18th Military Police Brigade, the 89th Military Police Brigade was responsible for military policing and the training of Iraqi police during some of the most trying periods of Operation Iraqi Freedom, with the 89th replacing the 18th on 31 January 2004 and returning to its home base at Fort Hood the following December. The 89th returned for a second tour in Iraq in August 2006, with an increased emphasis on training Iraqi police and security forces; it was replaced in October 2007 by the 18th MP Brigade (the 18th’s third tour in Iraq). Several Military Police Companies and a Headquarters detachment from the 89th MP Brigade were also deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom between 2009 and 2011, with the last unit returning to Fort Hood in December 2012.
