U.S. ARMY 801ST COMBAT SUPPORT HOSPITAL UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 801st Combat Support Hospital Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as  “unit crest” or DUI, was originally approved for the 801st General Hospital on 4 November 1971. On 1 September 1995, it was effectively redesignated for the 801st Combat Support Hospital, with revised symbolism and description.

A scroll containing an inscription of the 801st Combat Support Hospital motto, “To Serve Man And Country,” is colored maroon and white to indicat the unit is a part of the United States Army Medical Department. The scroll encircles a red cross, traditional symbol of aid, that is surmounted with two gold lions passant guardant; the imagery is taken from the coat of arms of Normandy, where the 28th Station Hospital (predecessor of the 801st) served in the Northern France campaign during World War II. Two blue bands on a white field are adapted from the flag of Chicago, a reference to the unit's home area.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 801st Combat Support Hospital was originally constituted in the Organized Reserves in July 1923 as the 28th Station Hospital; it was first given its current numerical designation designation in 1947 when it became the 801st Station Hospital; it received its designation as Combat Support Hospital in 1995.

In mid-July 2023, the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity (AMMDA) partnering with the Army Reserve’s 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support), began converting the 801st Combat Support Hospital (CSH) into a Hospital Center. Hospital Centers are a new Role 3 hospital structure made up of five modular units with inherent capabilities to deliver mission-specific medical and surgical health service support. The AAMDA began converting CSHs in early 2022, with the 801st Combat Support Hospital being the last to undergo the transition. In all, eight Army Reserve medical commands belonging to the 801st Combat Support Hospital will be re-equipped. It is unclear when the unit will be given its new designation.
