U.S. ARMY 728TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or a DUI) of the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD) 728th Military Police Battalion features a wavy bend (diagonal bar) dividing an anvil in the upper right and a bell in the lower left. The anvil and red bendlet (a diminutive of the bend, here found within the bend) symbolize the areas of River Rouge and Detroit’s industrial sector, both of which were protected by the Battalion; the bell denotes service in Korea. “In Peace As In War” is the unit motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

Headquartered at Schofield Barracks on Oahu, Hawaii, the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD), 728th Military Police Battalion is assigned to the 8th Military Police Brigade and, as of 2020, comprises four MP Companies and two MP Detachments. It was constituted on 10 January 1942 in the Army of the United States and activated 19 January 1942 at Fort Custer, Michigan. In 1949, the Battalion was allotted to the Regular Army, and during the Korean War it took part in eight of that conflict’s ten named campaigns, earning two Meritorious Unit Commendations.

On 1 October 1976, its organic elements were inactivated in Korea at the same time the unit was given its current designation. Since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the HHD, 724th MP Battalion has been given official credit for participation in just one campaign, with additional campaigns yet to be determined. Nonetheless, the organization was awarded two more Meritorious Unit Commendations (for tours in 2007-2008 and 2011-2012).
