U.S. ARMY 504TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 504th Military Police Battalion is a subordinate unit of the 42nd Military Police Brigade, part of the 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, a major command of I Corps. It was originally constituted in the Organized Reserves as the 304th Military Police Battalion on 29 July 1921. Withdrawn from the Organized Reserves upon inactivation in January 1938, it was redesignated as the 504th Military Police Battalion on 1 June 1940 (it had been reactivated two weeks earlier).

During World War II, the Battalion would take part in no less than nine campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, earning four Arrowheads for taking part in assault landings. Inactivated in Germany on 20 January 1947, the unit was reactivated on 2 October 1950 and has remained active ever since, taking part in an amazing sixteen of the seventeen total named campaigns in the Vietnam War while earning two Meritorious Unit Commendations, a Republic of Vietnam (ROV) Cross of Gallantry with Palm award (1966 – 1970, and an ROV Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class (1970).

While its campaign participation in the War on Terrorism is yet to be determined, it has been the recipient of two Meritorious Unit Commendations, the first for its stellar execution of the Police Partnership Program in western Baghdad between February 2005 and January 2006 and another for detention operation missions and combat support operations (August 2007 – April 2008). As of Autumn 2023, the 504th Military Police Battalion is an active unit assigned to the 42nd Military Police Brigade. It is headquartered at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

The 504th Military Police Battalion Distinct Unit Insignia, also called a DUI or “unit crest,” was approved on 31 March 1942. Its green and yellow tones are the official branch colors of the Military Police Corps. A hand grasping and holding a wyvern (dragon) symbolizes the power and ability of the Battalion to uproot evil; the Oriental styling of the dragon may also be an allusion to the unit’s outstanding service in Vietnam. "Duty Justice Honor" is the unit motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
